Scenes are not good between lovers, but needed in stories

I am just reading a work by someone who has written what could be a (terrifying) but good story, but what is missing are scenes between people. We all have a tendency (myself included) to want to tell the story, rather than show. it’s an old saw in writing schools, Show don’t tell. And, as with writing, there are always exceptions to the rule. But people want to care in stories. And they care through characters they see and imagine and relate to. You can’t bring up a main character and leave him for 75 pages to digress into activities around the world. You have to stay with the emotion and the conundrum you brought up right away. And emotion comes from people doing things to and with and for people. If one makes sure to write in scenes, the rest is just rewriting!
